Pregnancy through the eyes of a first time mother

Being a person whose appétit was low, when it suddenly went up, there was reason for me to question it.

Why was I suddenly feeling the urge to eat and getting hungry after short intervals? “I’m pregnant,” was the first thought that crossed my mind. My husband and I got excited about it and even started joking about it.

Then in the middle month, my tummy started feeling funny like I was getting into my periods. That automatically ruled out the pregnancy thought. But from the time the thought had hit me, a bit of me was holding onto it, not willing to let it go.

Then I met my brother, a gynaecologist, and I looked for reasons for him to tell me that I was (pregnant).

“You see these days my legs feel weak, I feel tired,” I went on and on. As if sensing where I was headed, he simply asked the usual question. “Have you had your periods?” Being mid month, I was still waiting. There was still hope. But he advised I do a pregnancy test.

Eager to find out what the results were, my husband and I decided to take the test from home. It had strict instructions that had to be followed.

There was a line at which it had to be dipped in urine. Once two red strips appeared along the slip test, it would be positive. If one strip appeared, it would be negative. If there was no strip at all, it would be invalid which would mean we had done it wrongly and would have to do it again.

So here we were; we carefully dipped it into the urine sample and eagerly looked on as it seemed to take forever. Seen a snail move before? This is just how slow it was. Suddenly one strip appeared, and in less than a minute, the second strip appeared. Making them two strips, the test had come out positive.

So I was pregnant. We were parents to be. “Congratulations,” my husband said to me amid smiles. Next we were going to share it with our parents, relatives and friends.

Wow, it was a joy telling them. What was most heart warming and built up our happiness were the screams of joy we got, the congratulations whenever we shared the news.

An immediate thank you prayer was also sent up to God. Here we are now, looking forward to each day and what it has to offer.
