NAKAWA division has asked Kampala City Council (KCC) to improve the area’s sanitation. This was contained in a report filed by the division’s surveillance officer, James Ategeka, on the recent cholera outbreak that affected Katoogo–Kinawataka and Mutungo.

“The area has only one public toilet, no bathrooms and waste is disposed of in kinawataka swamp,” Ategeka said. After the outbreak, KCC inspected the area and found out that car washers were using the swamp as a toilet.

The area leaders have urged KCC to establish a cholera health centre to curb fresh infections. “A total of 56 people have been infected, with four deaths,” Joseph Ssenzoga, the Kampala district health surveillance officer, said on Monday.

KCC is sensitising the community on hygiene. Kits have also been provided to test water in the affected areas. All eating places around the swamp have been closed.

Cholera has also hit Kilokole and Bugalani in Kawempe division. Mulago camp is the only cholera centre in Kampala.
