THE opening round of the 2006 national rally championship due next month has been shifted from Rakai to Masaka district.

Southern Motor Club president Dusman Okee revealed at the launch of the rally at Hotel Equatoria yesterday that the event has been renamed ‘Masaka Challenge Rally’. It was previously called Rakai Rally.

“We have got a lot of support from Masaka district administration. We definitely had to take the event where it was most appreciated,” Okee explained in an interview with The New Vision after the launch, presided over Masaka LC V boss Vincent Ssempijja.

Masaka district will provide accommodation for officials and drivers, security, and ambulance vans among others.

Nabugabo Sand Beach and Vienna Hotel are co-sponsors.

The rally will start with a super special stage at Nabugabo Sand Beach double circuit on February 24 before the second leg that will traverse the entire district the following day.

Scrutineering of cars is set for Auto Serve at Ntinda a Kampala suburb on February 23.
