FIVE out of seven suspects who were being held in connection with the Stanbic bank robbery have been released on Police bond.

The suspects, most of them bank staff, were being held in different Police stations over the robbery of over sh700m.

They were released on Monday. The Police said preliminary investigations did not link them to the robbery.

“We felt that they were not much involved, so we had to release them,” Police spokesman Edward Ochom said yesterday.

But as the five walked to their freedom, two other suspects were transferred to the Violent Crime Crack Unit (VCCU) for further interrogation.

The Police said findings indicated that the two were in possession of valuable information on the robbery, strongly pointing at insider involvement as the Police had earlier suspected.

“We managed to get some leads and the investigation is making some progress. Some other suspects have been arrested by the VCCU and the file on the suspects has been sent to the director of public prosecution (DPP),” Ochom said.

The release of the five suspects comes days after the Police first released the IPS branch manager, Jennifer Wanyama.

Wanyama was picked up earlier this month along with Hanifah Nakanjako, a teller, Deborah Rwomushoro, the assets custodian and James Sempebwa, the head of service support. The three were allegedly in charge of the strongroom at the time of the robbery.

Also picked were Madinah Namugabo, a teller and Joseph Bwire, the customer information consultant, who were in charge of various entry points.
