HOT plates also known as burners, are an alternative to cookers and other such appliances. Whereas some people argue that coil plates are faster, others say the solid ones are slow, but conserve a lot of heat.
Hot plates and gas burners are affordable, portable, light, easy to maintain and cook meals fast. They come in single, double and four plate variations.

At Modern World Ltd, Kampala Road, burners cost between sh60,000 and sh100,000. Game Stores has Logik, Estia, Ideas and Sunbeam brands with one-year warranties. Single plates cost between sh50,000 and 60,000, while double plates range from sh55,000 to sh100,000. Gas plates cost between sh40,000 and sh65,000.

At Digital Planet East Africa Ltd, Jinja Road, double gas plate burners of the Kodama Japanese brand range from sh44,900 to sh84,500 with a two months’ warranty. Single burners cost sh39,000, while a double burner hot plate costs sh70,000.

At Kiboko Enterprises, burners cost sh65,000 upwards. At Mega Computers and Appliances, the Pigeon brand of a single gas plate burner costs sh55,000. The two-plate burners are at sh90,000, while the three-plate burners are sh125,000. The Sayona brand single burner is at sh75,000 and a double one at sh135,000.

Several shops dealing in second-hand domestic appliances on Namirembe Road have cheaper hot plates. Others are in Wandegeya, Kibuye, Katwe and Damanico’s on Kampala Road. Second’s Please, found at UMA Show grounds, is also another place with quality used products. Before you purchase a burner, make sure the device is tested for any possible faults.
