THE annual Luswata knockout championship will for the first time involve women as promised by the sponsors last season.

The men will however kick off the season on Saturday with top contenders Tornado B taking on Castle Development XI at Lugogo oval.

“The draws for the men are complete but we are in advanced stages for the women draw. The women will be in action with another knockout,” association organising secretary Davis Turinawe revealed yesterday.

In Sunday games, Tornado take on Rounders at Entebbe oval while the Nilers travel to Jinja for a tie against the student packed side, JACC.

Champions Africa cricket club have a bye to the semi-final set for March 11.

The Luswata Cup is played in memory of Fred Luswata, a former administrator and fanatic of the game in the 1970s.

The deceased is also father to former national captain Paul Nsibuka and former chairman of Uganda Cricket Association Stephen Luswata. Susan Luswata, daughter to Fred, has also been deeply involved in the development of women cricket in the past.

Meanwhile, over 20 participants have completed a level two coaches course at Lugogo. South African tactician Harry Shapiro trained the group in various aspects of the game.

Shapiro will meet the national team before travelling back to Johannesburg after his one week working tour.
