Let us play our part; plant two trees a year

SIR — The other day, driving down Yusuf Lule Road towards the Jinja Road roundabout in Kampala, I was shocked to find that the huge trees in the island had been cut down.

I understand that that part of the road is being widened and perhaps there was a need to create more space, but still it poses questions as to the wisdom of our city planners: Why keep cutting down trees all the time?

After my initial anger though, I realised that it is pointless for us to keep expecting so much from our city officials when we, the citizens, are not doing what we could do to improve our environment.

Therefore, I want to pose a challenge to all of us in the city. If each adult in Kampala can commit himself or herself to plant at least two trees (preferably indigenous hardwood trees like Musizi or mahogany) a year, in five years we will have significantly improved our environment.

In 30 years, we will have provided a lasting legacy to our children. These trees are very cheap. Consider it a small contribution to the future.
