AKRIGHT Projects Limited has launched a campaign on safe disposal of solid waste and sewage. While launching the programme recently at Kirinya Housing Estates in Bweyogerere, the consulate of Pakistan in Uganda, Boney Katatumba, said the system would make disposal of wastes easier.

The managing director of Akright Projects, Anatoli Kamugisha, said the four-bin system requires every home to have different bins for garbage.

“Each bin will be used for a specific category of solid waste. The bins come in blue, red, yellow and black.

The blue bin will be for storing bio-degradable wastes such as banana peeling, food remains, leaves and flowers, which can later be decomposed and turned into manure or be used to generate bio-gas,” Kamugisha said.

The black bin will be used for storing polythene waste .

The wastes in the yellow bin will be recycled by heating. “This bin is for storing metals,” he says.

The red bin will be used for disposing of glass.

“As far as non-biodegradable wastes are concerned, we have so many factories looking for metal scrap and plastic products that can be recycled and used to make new products.

Our environment is being eroded and degraded by careless disposal and dumping of polythene.

“Unless we strive and curb this demonic waste, our soils will lose their fertility because roots cannot penetrate polythene,” Kamugisha added.
