INJURY rendered her inactive for most of the athletics season. But her gold medal at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games left a lasting impression.

Inzikuru not only struck gold, but also became the first female athlete to win the 3000m steeplechase race in the quadrennial games. In a dramatic run Inzikuru finished in 9:19.51, with three Australians on her trail.

The home crowd was praying for an upset of world champion Inzikuru. But Australia’s Melissa Rollison and Donna MacFarlane found a tough opponent in the Ugandan.

Inzikuru led the group over the hurdles and water pit, with Rollison fast on her heels in the final two laps. But at the third and final hurdle the much stronger Inzikuru broke away to take the top prize.
It was a morale boosting win for Uganda that later also broke Kenya’s 10000m dominance with Boniface Kiprop winning gold.

But Inzikuru was thereafter off the scene for long. She was back in the headlines in November when she won the national 20km road race in Iganga.

Should Inzikuru scoop the utl/USPA sports personality of the year award tomorrow, it will be for a record fourth time.
