IT pays to be courteous to the influential. Margie Olive Ekallam, an employee of an international audit firm in town, received a 14-inch colour TV from Dr Stephen Mallinga. The health minister gave it to her as a gift for her good services. The TV is worth sh500,000.

Ekallam was a hostess at a fundraising dinner to raise $20,000 (about sh35m) organised by the Lions Club of Kampala Central. Mallinga was the chief guest at the dinner.

The minister turned bidder, paying over sh220,000 on top of the reserve price to become the highest bidder. He said Ekallam had been courteous to him by carrying him food from the serving hall to his table.
