District to host UN village

KABERAMAIDO-The district has been selected to host one of the United Nations Millennium Villages, a senior UN official has said. Theophane Nikyema, the resident coordinator, in a statement issued on Monday stated that Kaberamaido was selected because it was one of the poorest in the country. He said the establishment of another UN Village follows the success of one in Ruhiira village in Isingiro district. The villages help poor people in Africa to become self reliant through investing money, scientific knowledge and inputs into the health, food production, education, clean water and physical infrastructure.

Teachers claim arrears

BUDAKA-Over 20 teachers from Kamonkoli College last week stormed the district headquarters demanding salary arrears for the months of April and May. The teachers claimed that the district authorities had diverted their salaries. But the LC5 chairman, Sam Mulomi, said Budaka was among 36 districts whose salary for secondary school teachers was under-budgeted. He added that this caused a revenue shortfall of between sh250m and sh300m. Mulomi explained that they had instead received funds for the payment of salaries to tertiary institutions that did not exist. He said he had requested the finance ministry to allow them use the money to pay the arrears.

MP lauds Federation

NAMUTUMBA-The East African Federation will create stability and help end rebel insurgency, the eastern youth MP, Zaake Kibedi, has said. He noted that groups like the Lord’s Resistance Army would be easily eliminated. “The federation will empower us to end activities of such groups. They have been acquiring arms illegally across the borders but this will not be possible when the federation is finally achieved.” Kibedi was speaking at meeting on the fast tracking of the East African federation held in the district on Friday. Augustine Nshimye, the deputy chairman of the national consultative committee, said the federation would create a customs union, common market, monetary union and political federation.
