AFRICAN member states of the UN Scientific and Education Organisation (UNESCO) should develop programmes that eradicate poverty and consolidate peace.

The education minister, Geraldine Bitamazire, on Tuesday told secretary generals of UNESCO commissions meeting at Ridar Hotel, Mukono, to ensure that programmes developed benefit the people.

“We need to be aware of the primary concerns and needs of the communities we are meant to serve. It’s only then that we can ensure that the programmes we develop benefit our people.

“Top on our agenda should be the global desire to eradicate poverty and consolidate peace.”

She challenged the delegates to design programmes that will ensure attainment of education for all.

The minister stressed the importance of science as a tool for development and urged UNESCO member states to take it seriously.

Augustine Okurut, the UNESCO secretary general for Uganda, said the consultative meeting was aimed at reviewing performance and arranging new programmes for both country and cluster levels.

He explained that the UNESCO secretariat was avoiding imposing programmes on member states without considering their national priorities and interests.
