AT the moment, markets are flooded with tomatoes of different types at give away prices. One can purchase a kilogram of tomatoes from Nakasero Market at sh1,500 and between sh2,500 to sh3,500 per bowl (katasa). In St Balikuddembe Market, one can buy tomatoes for as low as sh500 a kilo while a bowl goes for sh2,500. In Kalerwe and Nakawa markets, prices range from sh500 to sh3,000 depending on the quality.

How to shop for tomatoes
Choose tomatoes that are oval shaped. These will not rot quickly because they are not as juicy as the round ones.

While shopping, the price of the product reveals a lot about it’s quality. Tomatoes in large amounts and yet sold at low prices tend to be of bad quality. Pay more attention than you would ordinarily do. Take time and choose tomatoes that are fresh. You can also buy tomatoes that are not ripe. Keep them in a cool place and after two to three days, they will be ripe.

Making full use of tomatoes
We usually just use tomatoes in preparing sauce. However, in this season when they are in plenty, find another use for them.

You can team them with other vegetables to make a vegetable salad. You can also make homemade tomato sauce and eat it with snacks like chips or even on eggs.

Method
-Cut the ripe tomatoes into reasonable pieces and put them in a saucepan.
-Cut garlic to small pieces and add it to the tomatoes

-Add a little salt and add water to the content in the saucepan.
-Put on fire and boil until the mixture forms a paste
-Sieve to remain with a smooth paste
-Pack in a storage container
