Man jailed six years over theft
JINJA - The Chief Magistrate’s Court last week sentenced a man to six years in jail over theft. The prosecuter said Joshua Isabirye had just completed a two-year sentence over a similar offence. The Chief Magistrate, Cissy Mudhasi, concurred with the prosecution. Court heard that Isabirye and others on the run broke into Daniel Isaba’s shop at Mafubira Trading Centre on July 12 and stole an assortment of goods.

Court rejects witness plea
MBALE - Court on last week rejected an application by the defence lawyers Okumu Oboth and Omoding Okalany seeking to access witness statements before the start of the hearing in an embezzlement case. The Inspector General of Government (IGG) had accused Philip Opolot, Samuel Okalany, Alfred Obore, George Omaset and Sylvester Oboth of causing the district a financial loss of sh65m. But the IGG, represented by the principal inspectorate officer, Hudson Ahimbisibwe, opposed the application, arguing that it would prejudice the case.

Locals tipped on sanitation
JINJA - The district Director of Health Services, Dr. David Kitimbo, has advised residents and leaders of Mafubira sub-county to improve the sanitation in the area.“Without intensive education, communities will continue to experience poor health, low income and high expenditure on medical treatment and eventually death,” he warned health workers on Wednesday. The LC3 chairperson, Richard Gulume, said only 65% of the households had latrines.
