THE former head of Buganda’s royals (Ssabalangira) died on Sunday night at Mulago Hospital.

John Mary Kanakulya, 71, was knocked down by a speeding car at a zebra crossing on Kampala Road near the Post Office over a week ago.

He sustained head injuries, which led to his death. He had served as the Ssabalangira for a decade.

Former Katikkiro (premier) Joseph Ssemwogerere described Kanakulya as a man who was very dedicated to his work and very helpful to the Kabaka.

“He was straight-forward and assisted me a lot with regard to the royal family. He will be greatly missed,” Ssemwogerere said.

Kanakulya, a gentleman renowned for his elegance and neatness, for a long time served as the chairman of the Uganda Development Corporation.

He succeeded Ssabalangira Besweri Mulondo, who was fired after he refused to support the motion to form a federal state of Buganda in the Constituent Assembly in 1995.

During Kanakulya’s tenure, he united Buganda’s divided royal family.

It was during his time that Buganda Kingdom got the Nnabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda, on August 27, 1999.
Kanakulya was succeeded by Ssabalangira Moses Kayima in 2005.

There will be a requiem service for him at Rubaga Cathedral on Thursday at 10:00am. Burial is on Friday in Masaka.
