HEALTH minister Jim Muhwezi has said the Movement Government has registered better performance in the health sector than the UPC regime, despite the latter building 22 hospitals across the country in the 1960s.

Addressing residents of Rukungiri town council on his re-election bid for Rujumbura parliamentary seat on Wednesday, Muhwezi said in the last 20 years, the NRM has built seven big hospitals which include Kaabong, Adjumani and Kisoro.

He said the government had also built 151 health centre IVs and 718 health centre IIIs at sub-county level. He said currently the government supports 2,273 health units across the country including those owned by NGOs.

“Our opponents have been saying NRM has not built hospitals like Kambuga and Itojo which were built by UPC. How do you compare our record with the 22 built by UPC?” Muhwezi asked.

Muhwezi said the government policy was to take health services nearer to the people unlike UPC which scattered hospitals.

He said the government had a good record in the fight against HIV/AIDS and that “because of our programmes on HIV/AIDS, people who were virtually dead are now healthy and looking for votes”.

Muhwezi said while he was away for a week, his opponents said he had gone into exile.

“Where can I go, I Jim Muhwezi, when I have my people who love me and keep giving me votes?” he asked.

He added, “when the UPC government wanted to kill me, I disguised myself as a woman, shot them, escaped to Kenya and came back. How can I then escape when I am in my government?”
