THE Charge’ d ‘Affaires at the United States Embassy, William fitzgerald, has said he is satisfied that the “overall result of the presidential election accurately reflects the will of the Ugandans”.

He was launching the Uganda Law Society ‘Legal Reporter’ at the High Court premises yesterday.

The report is the latest in a series of volumes producing court decisions and it was funded by the US government.

Fitzgerald said, “I again congratulate the Ugandan voters on their participation in the February 23 multiparty election, which demonstrated their commitment to Uganda’s continued democratisation.”

“I m happy to note that the election was largely free of violence. I urge all Ugandans to respect the vote and to express their views about it peacefully and lawfully,” he said.

“I regret that this election did not occur on a more level playing field. I hope all leaders will work together to address legitimate concerns about the developments prior to the election and on election day,” he said.

He congratulated the Judiciary “on their fortitude and independence during a difficult period of political transition” and hoped that all leaders from all political parties will continue to respect the rule of law.

The Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, said the judiciary was preparing for election petitions.
