UGANDA Professional Boxing Commission boss Celestino Mindra has advised his amateur colleagues to consider lobbying legislators for support. “You can start off with the social services committee,” Mindra tipped Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation.

Mindra was giving cash-strapped UABF tips on how to secure the necessary resources in order to have a worthwhile Beijing 2008 build-up.

He was speaking at UABF welcome function for boxers Martin Mubiru, Atanus Mugerwa, Sharif Bogere and Edddy Akora from the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Bronze medalist Mubiru was rewarded with a bicycle. The four fighters were also each given sh50,000 cash tokens.

The boxers formed the most ill prepared part of Uganda’s team. They had only a week's training.

“You should start preparing for Beijing now if we are to avoid embarrassment,” insisted Mindra.
Boxing has been Uganda’s most successful sport. But it last won an Olympic medal at the 1980 games in Moscow where John “The Beast” Mugabi got silver.

Mindra also urged UABF not to view UPBC as an enemy. “We are partners and should therefore co-exist,” stressed Mindra. UABF has previously been wary of the professional body.

At one point Charles Lubulwa, a boxer at three Olympic games, was punished by UABF for training boxer Justin Juuko.
