Large classes in primary and secondary schools are affecting the quality of education, experts have said, reports Mariam Nalunkuuma.
Dr. Basima Mpandey, the deputy vice-chancellor of Kyambogo University, said, “Despite big enrollment and large investment in infrastructure development in primary schools, large classes are affecting the quality of teaching and learning.”
Mpandey was representing education minister Geraldine Bitamazire at the African-Asian universities dialogue at Makerere University senate building last week.
He also launched a research project on strategies to improve teaching and learning in large classes for basic education support in Uganda.
The co-ordinator of the research project, Dr. Goretti Nakabugo, said, “The large class issue requires investigation because it’s the major challenge affecting learning. In classes of over 40 pupils, children are attended to as a group and not as individuals.”
