The southern regional Police commander, asuman Mugenyi (right), has apologised to journalists in Masaka region over the arrest and alleged harassment of a reporter by Police detectives.
A Police detective attached to Mugenyi’s office, Moses Byabagye and his colleague are said to have roughed up Issa Aliga, a reporter of uganda Radio Network (URN) and Buddu FM on Tuesday.
They accused Aliga of failure to turn up to make a statement over an alleged libellous story.
The detectives, travelling in a salon car UAB 317R, reportedly found Aliga standing outside the New Vision offices on Elgin Street.
They allegedly grabbed Aliga and forced him in their car and sped off.
Aliga was reportedly taken to the Police station and was ordered to write a statement.
Aliga, who said he was sick at the time of arrest, was accused of filing a story to URN against the former Rakai district Police commander, Patrick Ntoole, which was published in The Red Pepper and aired on several radio stations but was later retracted.
Mugenyi, however, told journalists who stormed his office after the arrest that he was sorry about the incident, and that he had not been informed about it.
“I will call my commanders and brief them about the role of the media in our work,” he said.
