Ngoni kick up party vibe with ‘Bigula’

They have always lent their feel-good mix of Afrobeats and Zouk to local pop music.
The Ngoni (Pato Nyanzi and Aydee Mpagi) have just jammed the radio waves with yet another hit, Bigula. In the song, the lead singer urges a female dancer to keep shaking and gyrating towards him.

Although the lyrics can sometimes seem licentious, Bigula is inscribed in such soundly commercial and confident party tunes that one would never at all mind the lewdness. The bass beat varies at an extraordinarily lively rate and is often interspersed with light Zouk melodies. Bigula has the added benefit of state of the art recording from a subsidiary of the Sony UK Records.

Ngoni sure know how to communicate the excitement and spontaneity of a dance party. Bigula is indeed another highlight of the Ngoni’s much anticipated debut album.

Their Nakupenda also has all the hooks that an urban music fanatic can revel in. That is, the catchy melody tripping along an instant drumbeat and often interspersed with Buchaman’s gruff hard core. But the dance beats belie the mournful lyrics. In Nakupenda, a man laments that he loves a lady who does not reciprocate his love.

The Ngoni will perform alongside US-based hip-hop star Akon in Dar-es-salaam tonight. They will also perform at the Kisima Awards in Nairobi next month.
