CONSTRUCTION of an international airport at Kasese to promote trade with the DR Congo and tourism begins next month, top officials of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have said.
“We have to develop the airport because tourism and air transport are symbiotic,’’ Rama Makuza, the CAA deputy managing director said, adding that 68% of global travellers are tourists.
He was speaking on Friday during a dialogue to commemorate 100 years of the 1st scientific expedition to the Rwenzori Mountains in 1906 by the Duke of Abruzzi.
He said the CAA, one of the sponsors of the celebrations, was looking at what would attract more tourists.
He said the CAA would repair one of the two centres that host tourists during mountaineering expeditions on the Rwenzoris.
Makuza said Kasese would provide easy access for tourists destined to the Rwenzoris and the Queen Elizabeth national park.
Other nearby protected areas include Kibaale national park, with one of the highest density of primates in Africa and the Bwindi impenetrable national park, which harbours half of the remaining gorilla population in the world, estimated at about 760.
Serapio Rukundo, the state minister for tourism, said they would work with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the works ministry to construct a 20km-road off the Kasese-Fort portal road to the Rwenzoris.
He said the Italians who named the peaks of the Rwenzoris had also helped to attract global attention to the mountain.
