ELECTRICITY Regulatory Authority (ERA) has granted Kakira Sugar Works (KSW) a license to generate and sell electricity to the national grid.

KSW intends to generate more than 12 megawatts of electricity from sugarcane wastes known as bagasse, resulting from sugar production.

Bagasse can be used in the generation of electricity through a process known as cogeneration.
ERA chief Frank Sebbowa, said the license allows KSW to produce six megawatts of electricity for the national grid.

“The process had delayed because KSW said they would produce more that 12 megawatts yet they initially wanted to produce six megawatts,” Sebbowa told an energy workshop.
