Dear doctor, I have begun losing my sight and I have had some nurses whisper that it is because of the antiretroviral combination that I am taking.

Dear doctor, I have begun losing my sight and I have had some nurses whisper that it is because of the antiretroviral combination that I am taking. Could that be the possible cause?

There are many things, which could be responsible for your deteriorating sight. It is a pity that the nurses are whispering about your condition without assisting you to find out the cause.
I suggest you seek the services of a doctor specialising in diseases of the eye (Ophthalmologist). He will check your eyes and advise you on what could be the cause and what can be done to help you.
Remember, people with HIV can and do suffer from other diseases HIV negative people get. In fact, they are more prone to them.
All drugs have side effects though I cannot think of one now which would cause you to lose your sight and in any case, you did not say what combination you are on. However, HIV can predispose you to an opportunistic infection caused by a virus called cytomegalo virus. This affects the eyes and unless detected early, it can lead to blindness. This often happens to people who have very low CD4 counts, such as 50 cells/ml or below. So it is important to monitor your immunity regularly while you are on ARVs to make sure they are working for you.
Lastly, try to establish and nurture a relationship between you and your doctor so that you can discuss any of your fears or hopes. This will help you enjoy a good quality of life while on ARVs.
The doctor may not, on his or her own, be able to assist you but they can arrange for you to see another colleague.
HIV is a multifaceted disease and often people have to work in teams in order to deliver holistic care.
