THE Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is to set up a centre to equip the youth with relevant skills required in the job market, an official has said.
Willie Otim, the commissioner for youth and child affairs, said the ministry, through the labour department, was also generating a data base to enable the youth access information on available jobs. This is geared at reducing unemployment, he said.
Otim was presiding over the Mayuge district youth day celebrations at the district headquarters on Friday, where he represented youth state minister James Kinobe.
The theme was ‘Tackling poverty together: The role of the youth in wealth creation for all’.
“We are also planning to put in more programmes for the youth to ensure that they play a more gainful role in the programme design and implementation. This will help them to develop the required skills and competencies to enhance their competitiveness in the job market,” he said.
Otim advised the youth to utilise the empowerment programmes initiated by the ministry to start their own income-generating activities and become job creators.
“There is also a programme that addresses the sexual and reproductive health concerns of the youth. It runs in nineteen districts,” he said.
