STATE minister for higher education Gabriel Opio has said the Government will next year sponsor some students in private secondary schools and polytechnics.

Under Government policy, every sub-county is supposed to have a secondary school and a polytechnic.
Opio said 241 sub-counties, mostly in the north and north-eastern Uganda, do not have any government-funded secondary school.

Opio was recently presiding over the graduation ceremony of Bbowa Polytechnic in Luwero where 26 trainees under the Promotion of Employment Oriented Vocational Training and Education Local Skills Development Programme graduated.

The only female welding trainee Hajjat Maimuna Wanyana, 38, emerged best in her class. The training was funded by German Technical Service.

Opio said the Government is seeking a partnership with private institutions in which to place some of the students under the Universal Post-Primary Education and Training due next year.

Other sources said the vetting of the eligible private secondary schools and polytechnics kicked off on Monday at Makerere College School.

Opio said the Government will pay sh68,000 per term per student in a polytechnic in 2007. He said Government will also pay sh29,420 per term per student in a secondary school.

He said in addition each government post-primary institution and every approved private institution would get sh7m per term.
