THE Parliamentary Commission is yet to decide on the amount of money to be given to MPs to purchase cars, Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi has said.

Ssekandi, who is also chairperson of the commission, yesterday said they were consulting and would come up with an appropriate figure.

“We are handling the issue in the commission but people are already rising against the proposed sh60m. The commission is still consulting and is yet to come up with the final figure,” he said.

However, he said the Government purchasing cars for MPs was not a new idea since it was done in Kenya and Tanzania.

“Kenya currently contributes about Ksh3.3m on MPs cars and Tanzania about Tzsh20m, taxes inclusive. As we move towards the East African community, we need to be the same,” he said.
He said sh60m is for the 2000 reconditioned models and not new cars.

Finance minister Dr. Ezra Suruma told MPs during the NRM parliamentary caucus meeting that the government was willing to give sh30m to each MP to purchase vehicles.

But Mps rejected the money basing on the government’s policy of discouraging the importation of second-hand vehicles and argued that with sh30m they could only afford second-hand cars.
They want between sh60m and sh70m.
