Sensitise people about need for helmets

SIR — It seems traffic officers only care about bodabodariders only and not the passengers. Helmets are meant to protect a person from head injury in case of an accident.

It therefore does not make sense for only riders to wear helmets while their passengers do not.

I am not sure who is to blame in a situation where passengers continue to lose their lives for failure to wear helmets.

Is the rider supposed to reject carrying a passenger who has no helmet or must the rider carry a second helmet for passengers? should passengers be punished for not using helmets? These questions must be answered by our law makers in order to harmonise the bodaboda business. By the way, many riders only wear helmets only when they expect to meet a traffic officer.

This means they do not understand the need to use helmets, thus a need for sensitisation. Licensing alone is not enough.

As the CHOGM draws closer, the government must do whatever it takes to establish traffic discipline that should outlive the summit.
