Solar energy gets ERA nod

THE Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has granted permission to power firms intending to generate 100MW of electricity from solar and garbage wastes.

THE Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has granted permission to power firms intending to generate 100MW of electricity from solar and garbage wastes.

Energy System for Africa (ESA) and the North American firm, Naanovo Energy Inc, a joint venture applied to ERA for a permit to generate 50MW from sunlight and another 50MW from garbage recycling under a build-own-and-transfer model.

Naanova Energy will install, supply and provide technical support to ESA to offer smart merchandised power.

The solar project site will be at Namugoga, Busiro, off old Entebbe Road.

A 33KV line will be required to interconnect to the grid between Kajjansi and Kasubi.

ERA granted a 12-month permit at its 97th meeting, according to a statement.

its 97th meeting allowing the firms to carry-out feasibility studies on the solar project: “The application (permit) was advertised and no adverse comments were received, and the permit had been prepared and was ready for approval and issuance.”
