SUGARCANE technologists from Kinyara, Lugazi and Kakira factories have launched research into massive co-generation of electricity from sugar by-products for nationwide supply, reports Kyetume Kasanga.

raising hopes of meeting the future power shortfall in the country, the researchers, under the Uganda Sugarcane Technologists Association (USCTA), said major power and energy potential existed in the sugar industry, and appealed to the Government to support their project.

“If Uganda is to become involved in producing energy from molasses, bagasse, maize cobs and others, she will only do so when there is determination by the Government,” they said in their annual report for 2004.

The report was released during their seventh annual general meeting at Hotel Victory Bijja, Masindi on Thursday. USCTA chairman, Kakira Sugar Works general manager Richard Orr, chaired the meeting after a workshop opened by Kinyara human resource manager David Byensi.
