PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has backed the admission of more science than arts students into tertiary institutions.

“Uganda is beginning to introduce changes in its education and training systems that recognise how critical science and technology are to its future.

We have made the teaching of sciences compulsory in all secondary schools to create a critical mass of young people who appreciate science,” the President said in a speech read by finance minister Dr. Ezra Suruma at the Uganda Millennium Science Initiative (MSI) conference at Hotel Africana, Kampala.

The MSI project is funded by the World Bank.

“With respect to policy, the government should continue to promote widespread increases in science and technology literacy and capacity though the education system. Moving towards a system that requires some science of all university graduates may have the greatest impact on changing perceptions and attitudes towards science and technology,” he said.

He added, “This will pave way for widespread improvement in secondary education. It may also help break down the barriers that separate entrepreneurs from scientists, engineers and technologists.”
