UN, Tuesday - The head of UN peacekeeping operations, Jean-Marie Guehenno, has said there was no evidence that the helicopter crash that took Garang’s life over the weekend had been anything but an accident. The UN Security Council urged the people of Sudan on Tuesday to honour John Garang by restoring and pursuing peace.

Bush sad
WASHINGTON, Monday - US President George Bush has said he was “deeply saddened” by the death of Sudanese vice-president John Garang and stressed the need to act on a peace agreement to end Sudan’s civil war. In a statement released by the White House, Bush said, “Garang was a visionary leader and peacemaker who helped bring about the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which is a beacon of hope for all Sudanese.”

Kibaki visits

PRESIDENT Mwai Kibaki on Wednesday visited the offices of SPLA/M at Lavington in Nairobi, where he signed a condolence book in honour of Sudan’s first vice-president, John Garang, who died in a plane crash on Saturday.
Former president Daniel arap Moi visited the Sudan embassy in nairobi, where he delivered his condolences.

Peace prize
NAIROBI, Wednesday - A Kenyan cabinet minister yesterday launched a campaign to nominate the late Sudanese vice-president, John Garang, for the Nobel Peace Prize. Environment minister Kalonzo Musyoka said Garang and two others, who negotiated the January’s landmark peace deal, deserved the award.

SPLA to pray

The Sudanese People’s Liberation Army group in Uganda has organised a requiem mass for their late first vice-president, Dr. John Garang, on Saturday. The mass will be at Namirembe Cathedral in Kampala at 11:00am, a statement from the foreign affairs ministry said yesterday.
