THE Moyo incident where 17 qualified students missed university admission because their forms were not submitted to the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) should not be swept under the carpets.

THE Moyo incident where 17 qualified students missed university admission because their forms were not submitted to the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) should not be swept under the carpets.

The Ministry of Education and Sports should institute an investigation not only to ensure that justice is done to the unfortunate students, but also take disciplinary action against the responsible officers.

JAB forms help in the automatic placement of students to higher institutions of learning. As such, they hold the education future of students. It was, therefore, gross negligence on the side of the headteacher of Moyo SS to entrust the future of his students to someone who did not know where to take the forms. The 17 students from Moyo SS would have favourably competed for the 16 slots under the district quota.

In the absence of their forms, all the 16 places went to students of Metu SS, some of whom had much lower points. While the Ministry of Education establishes what happened, it would be wrong for these students to miss admissions for a mistake not of their own making.

Thousands of students annuallymiss placement to secondary schools and other institutions because their forms are not submitted. The ministry must be seen to act tough if the anomalies are to be stamped out.
