TWENTY-THREE Ugandans have qualified for scholarships to study in the UK. Of these, 20 are to study masters programmes and others PhDs.
The British Council coordinates the scholarship programme.

Chevening, KULIKA Charity Trust, Leeds University, Commonwealth, Hornby Trust, University of Nottingham and University of Surrey/Thames Water sponsor the programme.

Sarah Lubulwa, the British Council education services officer, said those selected must have obtained a First class or Upper Second degrees, had three-year working experience and below 35 years.

She said between 500 and 600 applications were received. Among the candidates are Simon Peter Okoshi the Uganda Police Marine Unit deputy commandant, (MA. Conflict, Development and Security); Olive Sabiiti, the Mpigi District Council speaker, (LLM International Business Law) and Mbarara University lecturer, Feresiano Mwesigye (PhD in Pure Mathematics).

Speaking during the pre-departure briefing at the British Council offices in Kampala, Charles Hamilton, the deputy British High Commissioner, said unlike African countries like South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, Uganda was not well known internationally.
