THERE was a stampede at the Mukono district headquarters on Friday when officials from the Inspector General of Government (IGG) made a surprise visit to the departments.

They were investigating alleged misappropriation of district funds and mismanagement.

The six-man team, working on the orders of Mukono RDC Deo Kayiwa Nsereko, is also investigating alleged incompetence by some district officials.

Recently, two officials who included the former district Chief Finance Officer, Robert Kalemba and the former district Personnel Officer Margaret Ntorentyo, were interdicted after they were implicated in corruption and abuse of office.

The RDC’s request followed an incident in which sh435m in Pay As You Earn funds tax from teachers went missing.

Nsereko said residents approached him, complaining of poor service delivery from district officials, in spite of the sh30b given to the district each year from the Central government.

Efforts to contact the district LC5 chairman, Godfrey Ddamulira Kyeyune, were futile as he was reportedly out of office the whole day.

The district information officer, Sewanyo Kiganda, said officials from the IGG’s office had begun investigating the implicated officials.
