SIR — There is a continuing misrepresentation that Milton Obote met Tom Mboya at Makerere, where the latter was his tutor. I know Obote was in Makerere in the late 1940s, and possibly left in 1948/49.
I am not aware that Mboya attended or taught at Makerere, and it is highly unlikely for him to have done so at that time. Mboya was born in 1930, which means he was a Makerere tutor when he was only 18 or 19 years of age! I find that highly unlikely.
My own view is that it is more likely that the two met when Obote moved to Kenya.
It is also likely that Mboya mentored Obote (being an early activist in the Kenya trade union movement, but I doubt that he was ever his ‘tutor’.
