SOUTH African captain Norman Raad carded 66, one stroke short of the Kitante course record at the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship yesterday.

Raad’s display earned him the individual player award and helped his country clinch a third successive title at the bi-annual championship.

South Africa, a dominant force, rose to victory at the 72-hole stroke play event after the success of 2001 and 2003.

Raad’s feat in the third 18 yesterday morning pushed him one stroke close to his Ugandan counterpart Deo Akope’s record equalling 65 set in 2000.

“I hit the ball well, I am happy for myself personally and for my team,” Raad said.

Raad, who sunk seven birdies and was level on ten holes, brought three-under-par 34 on the first nine. He was also three under 32 on the second nine.

In 2000, Akope carded 65 in the final round to win the Uganda Open for the first time. He equalled the 1967 record set by a Briton J. Palmer.
