The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) will destroy 942.2 cartons of super-match cigarettes impounded from smugglers by Special Revenue Protection services (SPRS) in the last two financial years.

SPRS public relations officer, Bahoku Barigye on Tuesday said the contraband will be burnt by Bank of Uganda Jinja Currency centre.

Addressing journalists in Jinja, Barigye said URA stopped the policy of auctioning contraband.

“We were compelled to drop the policy because it was doing more harm than good on the economy,” he said.

Barigye said the bidders abused the policy.

“They would fraudulently use the documents issued to them by URA during transaction to smuggle more goods,” he said.
