DEFENCE Minister Amama Mbabazi yesterday assured Parliament that the security situation in Kisoro district was normal, following last week’s incursion by Congolese rebels.

“We have opened contact with authorities from the Democratic Republic of Congo so that such incursions do not happen again,” he said.

The minister was responding to concerns raised by MP Aggrey Awori (Samia Bugwe) about the Government’s failure to keep the House informed despite the recent attack on Kisoro by unknown people from Congo.

Mbabazi said the Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo governments have been meeting over the security situation and would issue a statement in a few days after an agreed position has been reached.

He said the meetings are taking place under the facilitation of the US government. He did not comment about the venue of the meetings and those attending.
He said a unit of Congo forces entered Uganda in search of food and were engaged by a UPDF unit because they were armed, in uniform and entered without permission.

Mbabazi said UPDF killed three of the Congolese troops during the incursion.

He dismissed as untrue reports that Gen. Nkunda, the leader of the forces which overrun Bukavu town recently, was in Kampala and had held meetings with government officials.
