Col. Dr. John Garang (above), the chairman of the Sudanese Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM), was among people whose academic records got burnt in the Nabumali High school inferno.

Nathan Etengu reports that Garang was at the school from 1946 to 1948.
“He was politically active and a good debator,” his former classmate, Canon Codovia Wakiro, said on Sunday.

He said Garang was one of the students from Southern Sudan and western Kenya who were referred to Nabumali for higher learning.

“We also had students from Lango, Acholi, Teso and Maseno in Kenya,” he recalled.
Wakiro, whose records were also lost in the fire, said he studied at the school from 1943 to 1948.

Former students said no amount of injustice could have warranted the burning of the school.
