NGOs urged to work with teachers

NON-Governmental Organisations (NGO) in Uganda have been urged to form a coalition with teachers for the global campaign for Education.

By Kenneth OtimNON-Governmental Organisations (NGO) in Uganda have been urged to form a coalition with teachers for the global campaign for Education.Mr Richard Etonu, the coordinator, Uganda Teachers Association (UTA), said that if NGOs formed a coalition with UTA, education would be for all.“NGOs should empower education in Uganda through study cycles and school representatives,” he said. He said UTA would form an advocacy for the rights of marginalised groups like children and women.The activities of UTA would this year embark on campaigns against HIV/AIDS scourge and form credit schemes for teachers.Teachers in Soroti district were urged to join the association to benefit from the institutional capacity building in districts when operational offices are established.UTA aims at empowering teachers to plan, implement, monitor, and appraise the association activities pro-actively to improve teacher's conditions of service, welfare and professional image. The teachers would benefit from the life insurance and their families, further education, saving schemes and better professional skills when the UTA transforms into a union.Mr. Benjamin Ouma, the Soroti district teachers’ chairman said that teacher as leaders in communities need morale and motivation by forming a union.
