THE Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has restricted international organisations from directly undertaking conservation projects in the national parks.

By Gerald TenywaTHE Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has restricted international organisations from directly undertaking conservation projects in the national parks.Lilly Ajarova, the UWA’s spokesperson, recently said the Jane Goodall Institute, World Conservation Union (IUCN), GTZ and FACE projects in the parks would be co-ordinated by UWA.“We have developed a new policy because we have the mandate to manage the parks. Maximum benefits should be generated from the implementation of projects,’’ Ajarova said. She said there were disparities in salaries paid to the field staff, which affected performance due to lack of morale among the UWA staff.“The policy will also help us to co-ordinate the projects better, avoid duplication and ensure resources are utilised efficiently,’’ Ajarova said.Organisations and donors will have to go by our conditions if they are to operate in the parks, she said.Ends
