LONDON – The mother of one of the five British men held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Friday lost a battle in the high court in which she was demanding that her son be given a lawyer and treated as a prisoner of war.Zumrati Juma, the mother of Feroz Abbassi, a 22-year-old from Croydon, South London, who is being held for allegedly fighting in Afghanistan, said Abbassi was being held in Camp X-Ray in a way that “violates his fundamental rights under international law”.Lawyers representing the family were told by the judge Justice Richards that a British court had no jurisdiction in the grounds of international law. He said it would “seriously undermine the comity of nations” if he were to grant a judicial review which would press the government to intervene on Abbassi’s behalf.Juma had called upon the foreign and home secretaries to demand that the US government grant her son access to a lawyer.
