For students planning to further their education at Kyambogo University, here is some good news

FOR students planning to further their education at Kyambogo University, here is some good news: The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Lutalo Bbosa, said while addressing new students at the campus that the university is to establish a students’ loan scheme to reduce on the burden of tuition fees and cost of living. The beneficiaries will pay back the loan when they get employed. Hopefu-lly, they get the jobs.

The fate of primary school teachers who graduated with diplomas from Mubende National Teachers’ College earlier this year is unknown. Kyambogo university registrar, Dr. A.A Cuula, announced cancellation of the results recently, citing massive leakage of the examinations. The teachers (or are they?) have vowed to pursue the matter in courts of law. May justice prevail in this case. If the would-be teachers cheated, there is no need for them to go out there as professionals. At the same time, if they used their brains to pass, may they not be taken through the hustle of having to re-sit for papers.

As more graduates plan to flood the job market come January 17, state minister for finance, Isaac Musumba, has called for an overhaul of the Makerere University curriculum. Musumba observed that the university is churning out people who are not relevant to the country, and this means government would have wasted resources. Musumba has a point, but the whole education system needs to be revisited. Students should not be trained to pass examinations. Instead, they need to be helped to exploit their potential.

As Musumba floats the idea of overhauling the education curriculum at the oldest university in the country, other people are discussing the possibility of setting up new universities. Hopefully the packaging of the programmes in the new universities will be aimed at meeting the needs of the country.

In West Nile, President Yoweri Museveni has supported the proposed private Nile University. The second deputy premier and minister for Disaster Preparedness, Moses Ali, said that when they met with the president, they discussed many issues among which was the university. The president reportedly told the people to think deeply as to why they need the university. Happy New Year.
