SIR— There is concern about the student’s loan scheme, which according to some of us is overdue. The worry is that if money is lent to students, whose employment prospects are not sure, the chances of default are likely to be great. To make the students’ loan scheme a more successful undertaking, it should be the parents benefactors to be taken as the principal borrowers of the funds under the students loan scheme. The logic being that at the moment when the funds are being lent out, it is the burden of the parent or benefactor which is being lifted. And, it makes all the sense that the loan should be in the parents/benefactors name whose gross liability today to meet the institution’s tuition fees is being tightened for him/her.The idea is also based on the premise that the parent/benefactor can pay back in small instalments of the tuition fees over a period of time as compared to a lumpsome of say sh600,000 per semester.Willy Kituukawkituuka@yahoo.com
