KARIMOJONG raids for cattle in neighboring districts are on the increase, reports Chris Osekeny Jamu.
Local councillors and sub-county chiefs have said cattle rustlers have taken the advantage of lack of security in the area to raid more often. Many soldiers and local defence unit personnel were taken to Northern Uganda to fight the Lord’s Resistance Army of Joseph Kony.
Ngariam sub-county in Katakwi district where 17 people were massacred last year, was attacked again on Friday night by suspected Karimojong warriors.
One person was killed and 87 head of cattle stolen.
Katakwi resident district commissioner Ndiwa Chemasuet said Katakwi and Kapchorwa districts were robbed of cows and other property.
Katakwi deputy RDC Okello Olanya said 27 out of the 87 cows robbed from Katakwi were recovered by LDUs in Kotido district and will soon be returned to Kotido LC5 chairman Calistus Adome Lokwi.
He said Katakwi was training more LDUs to check cattle thefts.
Kapelebyong MP Johnson Malinga demanded for more guns for self defence. He called on the Government to replace the LDU personnel who were taken to the north for Operation Iron Fist. Ends
