FAROUK Fauza (picture top) will lead Uganda’s double attack at the Africa junior chess championship in Botswana.
The national junior champion together with Cathy Kenyangye will join the continent’s elite in action starting on Sunday.
The two players will be making an international debut. The competition is due to end on December 28.
Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) secretary Charles Isabirye is also on the team that leaves on Saturday.
“The players are in high spirits, they can not wait for the event to start,” Isabirye said.
Fauza is sponsored by UCF and Kenyange by her father and former national arbiter Augustine Rugyema.
The duo will come up against players from the continent’s giants-Zambia, Egypt, South Africa.
The event presents a chance for the two players to go a step better than former star Geoffrey Makumbi.
Makumbi won a bronze medal in Kampala in 1997 when Uganda hosted the event.
