Many parents leave their children’s academic work to teachers. To avoid this, Pic Hill Primary School on Saturday, November 8, held an academic day where parents came together to check out the performance of their children in class.
Sauda Gaira, the headteacher, said the school usually holds this day twice a year, at the end of first and third terms.
“Close follow-up by parents together with the teachers is the only way we can handle academic performance effectively,” Gaira said. “Parents discuss the children’s progress with the respective teachers and they get to learn their weakness and how the children can be helped,” she added.
Ronald Ntege, a P6 pupil whose books were being checked by his mother, said he liked academic days because his mother got to see what he did at school.
“Mummy has been checking my books to see how I perform and now she is going to check my mathematics progress on the progress chart hanging on the wall in class,” Ntege said.
Florence Agaba, a parent of two pupils in the school said academic day gives her a chance to rate her children in comparison to others. She also gets a chance to meet other parents.
“It is important because children are encouraged to work hard while anticipating this day,” Agaba said. “At times we may not have time to check our children’s work but this day gives us a chance to participate in our children’s academics,” she added.
Stephen Mugerwa, a P7 teacher, said, “There are monthly progress cards for P7, where we record results for monthly exams and parents are given these to check whether their children are progressing or declining.” Ends
