By John B.B. Nzinjah FLOODS have hit Kyondo village in Rukoki sub- county, Kasese district following heavy rains. The floods submerged at least 40 houses leaving them on the ground. The LCI chairman, Karuhanga Apuli, told The New Vision last week that at least 280 people were displaced. The floods occurred after River Ssebwe part of which the Mubuku irrigation Scheme diverts to irrigate crops, burst through its banks following the heavy rains in Kasese for more than two weeks. Members of the district disaster committee, led by the district council speaker, Joram Mbura-Muhindo, visited the affected area to assess the situation. However, there were no deaths of people and domestic animals reported but crops were covered by the water. residents said the situation worsened when water sprang from underground into their houses. "This is why houses have collapsed," they said. Muhindo said the situation faced by the affected people needed relief aid because they had lost their houses, house hold property, crops and would not easily survive. He appealed to non-governmental organisations and the Government to aid the affected residents especially with accomodation and food. Residents kept in doors out of fearthat they would drown outside.
