THE EASTERN Youth MP Jay Tanna announced his resignation on Thursday as his father was critically sick. Tanna will not now make a political impact. This is very unfortunate. Firstly, as a businessman of Asian origin, he would have had the chance to make a unique contribution to parliamentary debate and decision-making. Secondly, he broke the mould of present day Ugandan politics by getting elected outside his ethnic constituency. Ngoma Ngime tried the same thing in Mbarara and failed. But it is an excellent thing if politicians can aspire to be elected for reasons other than their tribe or religion. It means that they must sell themselves through their policies and ideas for development. Tanna may have gone but other Ugandans, especially those of Asian origin, should follow in his footsteps by seeking election outside their immediate home areas.
